Sorcha Kenny is a performer and artist. My Life in Dresses is an interactive research project that runs in tandem with a live performance piece and of course this blog. The performance strand of the project was originally developed as part of Project Brand New in April 2010 and went to have a sell out run at this years ABSOLUT Fringe.
My Life in Dresses is essentially a journey, I hope you will join me on it.
The idea stemmed from my fascination with second hand/vintage dresses which I spend all my free time scouring for in charity shops. When I find one and take it home, I wonder about the life this dress had before I owned it -who was she , what was her story, where did she wear this dress, why did she give it away. I will never know….
Your Dresses
But what about the dress you held onto from your past. The dress you could not give away because it has a special significance in your life, it triggers a memory. Maybe its the one you wore the day you met the love of your life or perhaps it reminds you of a loved one who is no longer here……
Be a part of the project:
Have a look below and see If this is you, if so, get in touch:
Older people who held onto a dress from their past that has a special meaning/memory for them.
People who have a dress belonging to a parent or grandparent. Maybe the item triggers a memory of that loved one or maybe its a story of how they passed the dress onto you..
Anyone who owns a dress that they believe has a story, a memory that they would like to tell!!
Ideally all of the above will have the dress they are talking about and/or a photograph of the subject wearing it, but mainly looking for great stories.
I look forward to hearing about all of your wonderful memories.
My Dresses
I am also using my own dresses as a way of connecting with people and creating new written histories for the dresses I own. I have given some of my dresses out to some kind folk for a period of a week, sometimes longer and they will keep a diary of their time with my dress, which I will post here as well as other dress adventures and encounters.
